Radio Music Society GRAMMY Winner

Last night was GRAMMYS night! Esperanza rocked home with two wins, the first for Best Jazz Vocal Album for ‘Radio Music Society’ and along with Thara Memory, they won Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for the song City of Roses. Nominees for the 55th annual Grammy Awards were revealed Wednesday night and Esperanza Spalding and her Radio Music Society, were nominated in three categories: Best Jazz Vocal Album along with Kurt Elling, Denise Donatelli, Luciana Souza and Al Jarreau, Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists for the song “City of Roses” and Best Long Form Video. Congratulations! The 55th annual Grammy Awards will be held Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.

Esperanza Spalding today announced that she will host and perform at a benefit concert for Free the Slaves, a human rights organization dedicated to eradicating slavery and human trafficking worldwide, at City Winery in New York City on Tuesday, December 4 at 8:00 pm.She will be joined by an exciting lineup of musical friends. In addition to vocalists Bobby McFerrin and Gretchen Parlato – along with other special guests to be announced soon – she will incorporate two groups for the show: a jazz quartet and the Chamber Music Society band. In addition to a live auction and merchandise sale, various ticket levels will be available, including a VIP meet and greet with Spalding. 100% of ticket sales, live auction items, and merchandise will go to Free the Slaves this special evening.

The trio of drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, pianist Geri Allen, and bassist Esperanza Spalding first came together to play on Carrington’s all-female, Grammy-nominated “Mosaic Project” album in 2011. The trio leans toward standards and judiciously chosen bits of jazz from the 1950s and ’60s and sits more in line with the acoustic jazz tradition. While it’s tempting to see this group as simply a dynamic combination of virtuosos with amazing depth and experience gathered together in a piano trio, this ensemble is much more. Pianist Allen and drummer Carrington have clocked myriad accomplishments, bending rhythms to suit their varied interests. Meanwhile, Spalding is the current queen of the jazz bass, so watching the chemistry present itself will be an experience not to be missed.
