Esperanza Spalding is promoting her new album, here’s reviews from Teen Vogue and Glamour!

Chamber Music Society – The New York Times

Several tracks into her third album as a leader, Esperanza Spalding offers up “Really Very Small,” an invention of hers arranged for standard rhythm section with a three-piece complement of strings. Her multitracked vocals appear first, in a waft of elfin ahs and ohs, before she starts a syncopated bass line, digging hard into a groove. The song, with its springy wordless melody and clockwork overlay of meters, comes across as a deft piece of work, current in its thinking and light on its feet. It speaks to the strictly musical side of her breakaway mainstream success, which of course is only part of the picture.

Since the 2008 release of “Esperanza” (Heads Up), Ms. Spalding has been the recipient of a truly unusual amount of goodwill. A smart, surefooted bassist and a frolicsome, irrepressible singer, she does her part to justify the acclaim. But her talent has been a good pretense for people who don’t pay much attention to jazz to marvel at its bright new hope. Her music now comes burdened with expectations.

All About Jazz Review

On the opening track of her much-lauded, self-titled major label debut, Esperanza (Heads Up, 2008 ), bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding covered Milton Nascimento’s timeless gem, “Ponta de Areia.” Rather than covering another of the singer/composer’s tunes on Chamber Music Society, Spalding recruits Nascimento to perform on her own “Apple Blossoms.” It’s but one example of a highly intriguing set that blends her classical training with jazz, pop and soul tendencies.

Chamber Music Society Album Release

Esperanza Spalding is releasing her second album on the Heads Up label, Chamber Music Society, on August 17th. Chamber Music Society is Spalding’s follow up to the 2008 release, Esperanza, which sat atop Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart for over 70 weeks.

Backed by drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and pianist Leo Genovese, Spalding draws from her classical training from her younger years and creates a modern chamber music group that combines improvisation with elements of jazz, folk and world music.

The album also features percussionist Quintino Cinalli, violinist Entcho Todorov, violist Lois Martin, cellist David Eggar and Gretchen Parlato on voice. Milton Nascimento makes a guest appearance on one track.
