Trio Shines Light on Women in Jazz

SFGateWhen drummer Terri Lyne Carrington hired veteran pianist Geri Allen, then-little-known bassist Esperanza Spalding and Dutch saxophonist Tineke Postma to play with her at the 2007 Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat, Israel, it was not her initial intention to put together an all-female band. The gig, however, did lead to her to record the Grammy-winning 2011 album “The Mosaic Project,” featuring 21 female instrumentalists and vocalists – Allen, Postma, Spalding, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Anat Cohen, Sheila E., Nona Hendryx, Mimi Jones, Gretchen Parlato, Dianne Reeves, Patrice Rushen and Cassandra Wilson, among them – and begin performing with Allen and Spalding in a group they call the ACS Trio, which will make its Bay Area debut Oct. 24 at the SFJazz Center.
